Two weeks Here

It's hard to believe I've been here almost 2 weeks! I'm very glad that
I am here for longer because I feel like I'm just starting to get used
to the culture, learning my way around, and getting used to heat and
schedule. I'm learning a little Luganda too. They do teach English in
school here, so educated people know English, but it can still be very
difficult to understand each other due to the dialect.

I've been spending my weekdays taking the taxibus to the village where
our office is. Then I go with a different guy from the Spring of Hope
team every day on home visits to different children with disabilities.
There we spend time educating their family on positioning, exercises,
and building adaptive equipment for them. I also have seen some kids
at the Spring of Hope office for appointments. They have a small
therapy room with a mat, standing frame, wedge, and some toys. I have
been writing about specific stories of children I've worked with on
the Spring of Hope blog. Here is the website: www.SpringOfHopeUganda.blogspot.com. It's crazy what kind of
things you can build with tree branches and banana leaf trees! I will
be updating this blog while I'm here, so feel free to revisit it to
read stories!

Last Friday I got the opportunity to visit an island out on Lake
Victoria for the day. I went with two of my housemates who are working
with different NGO projects, and the director of Youth with a Mission
in Uganda. There are people living on this island that have never seen
mainland. We had to very much "rough it." No running water,
electricity, and LOTS of bugs and bats! It was slightly uncomfortable
spending the night there, but it was very beautifuL! We hiked around
the whole island through different villages, jungles, and corn fields.
The people that live there live completely off the land! There is a
primary school already going there, a group is in the process of
starting a secondary school, and there is a medical clinic running on
the island. We got a chance to see little monkeys all around as well.
We also hiked up to the top of a hill at sunset, and it was gorgeous!

This past weekend was spent cooking good food with my housemates and
other friends I have met here, sharing laughs, and we also went
swimming, and to church again. I'm certainly enjoying my time here,
and learning sooo much.
